Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Epilepsia post traumatica. Cicatrix in regione gyri temporalis sup. sinistri. Oedema et hyperaemia cerebri. Autopsy examination of 15-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E, Cresyl violet and Heidenhein method..In specimens from all lobes, only the border of the left superior temporal valve and the insula showed a scar in the fine layer of the cortex. The scar protrudes into the fluid space and has a very large connective tissue reaction. Presumably, if sections had been taken, the serial scarring lesion might have been larger. In the meninges, small symptomatic infiltrates of lymphocytic, histocyte-like and plasma cells are present. In the brain, features of edema and congestion, vascular endothelium distended, spaces dilated, vascular-tissue borderline relaxed with lymphocytes and macrophages filled with blood stain. In the cortex of all subjects few cellular defects and disorders, mostly of ischemic type occurred. In the cerebellum homogenization of Purkinje cells and segmental atrophy were observed.
