Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Hydrecephalus et laesirnes parenchymatosae secundarie in cerebrum cum Arnold-Chiarie syndroma. Autopsy examination of 9-month-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections by Heidenhain, Van Gieson's and Cresyl violet stain.Cross sections through the cerebral hemispheres revealed a huge hydrocephalus. The cerebral cortex was very severely artifactually damaged, however, cellular de-fects and huge congestion were undoubted. Similar findings were observed in the white matter. In the cerebellum, gliosis and vascular stasis, also present in the brainstem were noticed. In addition, at the level of the midbrain and the medulla ob-longata, nerve cell damage and an overall pale myelin pattern were observed. The meninges, especially at the level of the brainstem and cerebellum, showed features of fibrosis inadequate to the age of the child and related to the disease process.
