Professor Józef Mądalski (1902‒1995) was the author and editor of numerous scientific works in the fields of floristics and plant geography, including most known, although unfinished, Atlas of flora of Poland and adjacent territories edited by him in 1954–1983. Mądalski was also an avid collector of plants. His herbarium, prepared with due diligence, comprising almost 40,000 sheets, was donated in 1991 to the W. Szafer Institute of Botany in Kraków (KRAM), where it is stored as a separate collection (hb. Mądalski).
