Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Status lacunaris. Atrophia cerebri. Arteriosclerosis cerebri.Cerebral atrophy. Atherosclerosis of the cerebral vessels. Autopsy examination of 59-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained by Heidenhain, Van Gieson's and Cresyl violet stain. In the cortex, diffuse atrophy of nerve cells was observed. In these areas glial cells also were scarce. .Preserved nerve cells often revealed features of fatty degeneration and tigrolysis. Ves-sels were filled with blood, in some leukocytic thrombi were noticed. Fibrous and occasional-ly vitreous changes were seen in vessel walls. In the pallidum, deposition of calcium salts in the media and adventitia, as well as loosely lying lumps of pseudocalcium were observed. Meninges were fibrotic, and fibroblasts, histiocyte-like cells, and single macrophages were seen around the vessels.
