Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Autopsy examination of 74-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E, PAS and Van Gieson's method.Multiple perivascular cavities of varying diameter were seen in both basal ganglia and in the white matter of the frontal and temporal lobe. In the right frontal lobe, incomplete necrosis was observed in the cortex and diffuse necrosis in the white matter, with rather sharp margins. The vessels were significantly altered atheromatous. PAS positive material was found in nerve cells, in reactive glia, in vessel walls and in amyloid bodies.Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia recens et inveterata. Status lacunaris. Arteriosclerosis cerebri.
