Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Glioblastoma multiforme. Autopsy examination of 73-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, Nissl and Van Gieson's method.Analysis revealed a tumor at the border of the basal nuclei, progressing to the temporal lobe. It contained many necrotic areas surrounded by pseudopalisades and numerous highly altered vessels with obliterative proliferation in the walls. In some parts there was a predominance of uniform astrocytic tissue with numerous gemistocytes and images of karyorhexis. On the other hand, in the parts on the periphery of necroses, fields of polymorphic cell with very numerous mitoses, amitotic divisions, giant cells with nuclear conglomerates were visible. Relatively numerous fields with a similar structure support the diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme.
