Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Haemorrhagia secundaria cerebri. Autopsy examination of 70-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E and Van Gieson's method. In the lateral part of the right thalamus, a hemorrhagic focus rim overlapping slightly the internal capsule was visible. At the upper and lower pole of the focus a large number of macrophages could be seen in a relatively wide area. Some of them were filled with hemosiderin, free hemosiderin grains were also visible in the tissue. A marked proliferation of capillaries was observed, especially over the thalamus. Edematous features were seen throughout the tissue, most strongly expressed in the inner capsule. Numerous cellular defects were found in the island cortex in layer III and smaller ones in layer V. Almost all cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus showed features of fatty degeneration. Vessels revealed atherosclerotic changes - mainly of hypertrophy of the appendage and dissection of the central membrane.
