Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia recens. Autopsy examination of 59-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin se ctions stained with H-E and Van Gieson's method.A fresh focus of malacia was observed within the inferior frontal gyrus. The gray matter structures showed incomplete necrosis with vascular proliferation and connective tissue reaction. The few preserved neurons showed ischemic changes. Spongiotic necrosis was observed in the white matter. Prominent edema was observed, and macrophages and single leukocytes were scattered everywhere. Several small vessels filled with leukocyte masses were found within the caudate nucleus body. The vessels walls were fibrously altered. Symptomatic infiltrates were present in the meninges.
