Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Encephalopatia post kernicterus. Autopsy examination of 3-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, Holzer, cresyl-violet, Heidenhain, Kanzler-Arendt and Van Gieson's method. The basal ganglia clearly showed cell loss and damage in the globus pallidus. These were accompanied by fibrous gliosis. Cellular damage and vacuolation were also seen in the head of the caudate nucleus. Perivascular thinning of the tissue was also observed there. In the cerebral cortex, cells showed diffuse damage. In the cerebellum, the lesions mainly involved cells of the dentate nucleus. Myelin pattern in the cerebral hemispheres and brainstem was within the normal range.
