Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Atrophia camellaris cerebelli. Oedema cerebri. Atrophia disseminata cortices. Autopsy examination of 60-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain frozen sections stained with cresyl-violet and Spielmeyer’s method.Very large perivascular spaces were found in the white matter on all specimens; vessels were mostly absent in these areas. At the few preserved vessels, small lymphocytic infiltrates were seen, most likely symptomatic. Thinning was observed in cortical cells and ganglia. The granular layer of the cortex was preserved, the Purkinje layer almost atrophied. Single remnants of homogenized cells were seen in places.
