Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia. Arteriosclerosis. Autopsy examination of 79-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E, cresyl-violet, orcein, Holzer, Bielschowsky and Van Gieson's method.A focus of encephalomalacia was found in the parietotemporal region. Its surroundings revealed broad areas with spongiosis, both in the cortex and white matter. Massive atherosclerotic and sclerotic lesions were observed in the basal ganglia and in the cerebellum, with the formation of sinuses also in the white matter. Large cellular vacuolations were observed. Characteristic senile changes were absent; the beginnings of fibrillary degeneration were seen in the ganglion neurons. No plaques were seen. .
