Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Meningoencephalitis purulenta metastatica.Autopsy examination of 32-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, cresyl-violet, Sudan and Holzer method. Frozen sections were stained with Spielmeyer method.Within the basal ganglia, at the border with the temporal lobe, very dense perivascular meningeal infiltrates consisting of small lymphocyte-like components and single large cells were seen. Images of karyorrhexis, or abnormal mitoses, were also observed. The infiltrate morphology resembled the composition of lymphocyte-like sarcomas. In adjacent brain tissue huge deposits of starchy bodies were seen. In the basal ganglia above the optic nerve, a whole packet of vessels with calcified walls containing already loose calcium crystals in the perivascular spaces was found.
