Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Meningo - encephalo - ependimitis probabiliter luetica.Autopsy examination was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain frozen sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and cresyl-violet.Inflammatory infiltrates, mostly lymphocytic, were observed in the meninges. They did not progress to the cortex in the form of mesodermal infiltrates, but in the cortex, especially temporal and cortex of the insula, a great number of typical Hortega's bacilli were found. The greatest intensity of the process was seen in the periventricular region. The process would require differentiation with tuberculosis, but the chronic clinical course, with a relatively fresh presentation, the rather typical localization, and the enormous amount of microglia suggest a syphilis matter.
