Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia cerebri.Autopsy examination of 66-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin.A foci of diffuse necrosis was found in the temporal lobe, destroying the white matter, partially the cortex of the superior and middle gyrus, passing in part to the insula, focally to the putamen. The foci were in the phase of macrophage dissection or in different phase of glial-mesodermal organization. In the surrounding tissues, a loose reticular tissue was observed. Desolation and ischemic disorders were observed in the cortex, mainly in the ammonal cortex. In the soft meninges adjacent to the focus, perivascular infiltrates composed of macrophages were present. The vasculature showed minor fibrotic changes. Whole brain exhibited features of edema and congestion.
