Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Enoephalomalacia cerebri alba et rubra. Arteriosderosis cerebri. Putrefactio.Autopsy examination of 68-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson. The temporal lobe cortex showed multiple foci of early necrosis, often hemorrhagic, being locally in the phase of leukocytic infiltration. Circular hemorrhages, hemorrhages per diapedesis, and large neuronal atrophy, often resulting in obliteration of the layered structure of the cortex and vascular activation were seen. Interpretation of cellular disorders was difficult because of putrefactive changes. Pseudocalcium salts were present in the globus pallidus vessels. In addition, the vessels were fibrously altered. In the meninges, large infiltrates of macrophages and histiocyte-like cells adjacent to the necrotic focus were observed.
