Description:

Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalopathia hepatogenes cerebeli pathia carcinomatosa.Autopsy examination of 46-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, Heidenhain and van Gieson method.A small degree of cortical nerve cell loss was observed, not affecting the normal laminar structure of the cortex. Cerebellar nuclei with a properly maintained nerve cell population. In the cortex, the amount of glia seemed generally increased, especially in its deeper layers /frontal and parietal cortex/. Here also there were hypertrophied forms of macroglia nuclei, with irregular, undulating borders. Significant edema was found, primarily in the white matter. Necrosis of the cerebellar granular layer was extensive. Within this layer, only retained glial cells were present; no granular cells were visible. In place of the granular layer, a reticular stroma covered with fragments of disintegrated chromatin structures was visible.
