Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia in veterata. Arteriosclerosis cerebri.Autopsy examination of 63-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, Bielschowsky and van Gieson method. In the white matter of the frontal lobe, the edge of a malacic focus was found. Deep within the focus, the neural tissue was dissolving. Large cellular atrophy was observed in the cortex, often occurring vascularly. Some cells, especially of layers III and V, presented changes typical of fatty degeneration, in some tigrolisis was visible. Large fatty degeneration was observed in thalamic cells and in the dentate nucleus. The vessels showed large sclerotic changes /vitreous and fibrous/. The smallest vascular changes were seen in the cortex /fibrous only/. Single histocytic cells and macrophages were observed in the meninges.
