Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis

Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia.Autopsy examination of 68-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method.Postmalacic focus was present within the ganglia. It perforated them reaching under the lining - there a large reaction of mast cell astrocytes was found. At the edges of the focus there was a very intense fibro-macrophage organization. At some distance from the main focus, several smaller foci of malacia were found. Extensive spongy thinning of the tissue and severe atherosclerotic changes were observed.
