Clinical, anatomical and histological diagnosis
Histological diagnosis: Oedema cerebri, probabiliter. Encephalomalacia recens. Arteriosclerosis cerebri.Autopsy examination of 65-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method. In a specimen obtained from the parietal lobe in which early necrosis was macroscopically found in the white matter, a brightened and loosened tissue structure, especially in the perivascular area, was evident, with a markedly reduced amount of glia. The interfascicular oligodendroglia was dilated, sometimes accentuating the course of the vessels. Macrophages with blood-derived pigment were present at some vessels. Cellular atrophy was evident in the cortex, and some neurocytes showed features of ischemic or chronic disease. The vessels were hypertrophied, with fibrous changes.
