Abstract:

The effect of melatonin (N-acetyl-methoxytryptamine), an animal hormone also present in plants, on the adventious shoot regeneration during induction at in vitro micropropagation of miniature roses cv. White Gem was examined. Melatonin at concentrations 5 x 10 '^ M and 5 x 10-^ M significantly increased regeneration of shoots. Although this compound has the same precursor, tryptophan, and similar chemical structure as auxins, commonly used in the micropropagation of plants, melatonin was more effective in this process than auxin, indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). In contrast to IBA, melatonin is not an inducer of the callus growth during regeneration of rose shoots. The results demonstrate that exogenous melatonin can be used in the regulation of processes in in vitro plant cultures. To our knowledge, these are the first data on the influence of melatonin on the adventious shoots regeneration and callus growth.
