Muscle segment examination in light & electron microscopy
A 65-year-old patient with suspected myopathy was examined. A biceps biopsy was performed.Muscle fibers of a diameter within a normal range, with preserved myofibril architecture, characterized by the presence of numerous small vacuoles, probably derived from the sarcoplasmic reticulumwere seen.Fibers characterized by the accumulation of a huge amount of autophagal structures and fat dropletswere observed. In some of these fibres , abnormal myofibrils lacking the A line was seen, in somethe entire muscle fiber was filled by autophagal and fat structures.Microscopic image of the biopsy may suggest adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) deficiency leading to neutral lipid storage disease.
