The name of a god was his essential part in archaic and traditional cultures. It was believed that callingthe name of a god invokes him and makes him present. This faith used to be a part of a number of magicalpractices. Loud articulation of a god’s name was and still is an element of (among others) healingprocedures of shamanism, Hindu meditations or Christian exorcisms. The paper describes this phenomenonas a sign of performative character of language actions. It recalls old as well as contemporaryspeech acts which use the names of gods.
