In the present draft I dealt with the group names, excerpted from the nineteenth-century notarial contractsfrom the area of Lukow. Notarial space seems to be restricted to the occurrence of certain categoriesof names, conditioned by a kind of communication situation and the type of language contact. Analysis of the names contained in the contracts shows that not only does it refer to personal names, butalso reveals both urban and rural cultural and social space. Names, functioning for centuries in the area, enriched the composite image of the Polish language, co-creating its naming layer. Names, apart fromtheir basic function of identifying people and objects, highlighting them against the other, keep theiroriginal sense of an important resource of knowledge about the past of the places that were related. Theyare living, lasting and distinctive trace of the past.
