Polska 1944/45-1989 : studia i materiały 10 (2011)
Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Throughout the whole period of Communist Poland, housing problems mirrored the image of socio-economic condition of the state and the situation of its inhabitants. Despite the evidence of censuses conducted in People’s Poland indicating progressing improvement in standards of dwelling houses and their decreasing overpopulation, in the 1970s the feeling of unsatisfied housing needs was prevailing. No wonder that in the face of constant discontent with the housing situation in Poland, all ways to relieve the housing tensions increased in importance, including the letters “to Warsaw”.Another critical aspect that was brought up in the analysed correspondence, besides the low standards of dwellings, was the necessity to separate families or to live in the excessively overcrowded apartment for many long years. The authorities’ responses described in the source material to those housing supplications were only a drop in the ocean of housing needs, an ephemeral reply to the most dramatic situations and neither solved nor helped to solve the global problem of thousands of people.
