Polska 1944/45-1989 : studia i materiały 10 (2011)

p. 203-222 ; Summary in English.
The purpose of the article is to present and compare the moral models presented in the selected women’s magazines for three spheres of life: marriage, household, and fashion and beauty. The magazines, ones of the most popular, were addressed to the urban women. They presented radically different models of marriage: in the Polish weekly marriage was pictured as the relationship between equal partners, based on mutual respect while not free of conflicts. In the ‘Kobieta i Życie’ (‘The Woman and Life’) columns a discussion was held about a crisis in the institution of marriage. The Spanish magazine was dominated by the notion that matrimony was the primary aim of every woman. ‘Marisol’ focused on the best ways to conquer men’s hearts and how to be a model wife. The role of wife and mother was the most important role for women in Spain of that period. In the sphere of household, both magazines fostered similar values: modernity, comfort, and simplicity, but also frugality and independence. They differed, however, in their perception of the social standing of a housewife; the Polish magazine placed her on a par with other social roles. Fashion promoted by the magazines was similar, although ‘Marisol’ warned against the violation of the norms of decency, while ‘Kobieta i Życie’ limited its range of accessories and jewellery presented in the columns. Slim figure was the basis of Spanish ‘Marisol’’s canon of beauty, and the magazine offered advice on diet and physical exercises, while the Polish one focused mainly on hygiene.
