Abstract:

The present sketch is an attempt to present the origins of the Education, Books and Press Days (Polish acronym: DOKiP) and to place them within a broader context of cultural propaganda of Communist Poland in 1946–1956.A genesis of the event has been thoroughly analysed, in 1946 named the Education Days, and the idea development in the following years. According to the conclusions drawn from the analysis, in the Stalinist period the concept underwent a meticulous examination and the final shape of the festivity was the subject of discussions at the top levels of the communist party. In 1946 and 1947 the main and only purpose of the event was the collection of funds and books for public libraries. In 1948–1949 the days were held under the banner of a “fight against illiteracy”. In 1950–1952 the main slogans of the festivity were not only formulated in a highly ideologised language but also their choice was strictly subjected to the contemporary aims of the state and party leadership. In 1953–1955, due to the advancing “political thaw”, the event was restricted to the campaign for popularisation of reading, and in 1956 it was the “experiencing” of the DOKiP as the “joyful festivity of the book” that came to the fore.
