Abstract:

The present study should be regarded as a case study, based on the correspondence to the central state authorities, devoted mainly to the problems of production and distribution of butter and margarine. In the author’s intention, this specific problem is the pretext to present a much broader scope of issues. The problems of butter and margarine disclose detailed issues of politics, agriculture or trade, and in a general depiction – functioning of the economy of shortage and of the Polish People’s Republic (Polish acronym: PRL) as a special case of real socialism.The article is divided into five parts. The first one is devoted to the problems milk producers had to deal with, starting from the lack of basic appliances to the need of specialised agriculture equipments. The next one presents, on the example of the letters about dairies, the problems of embezzlements, dishonesty and uneconomical management. Other issue discussed here is the PRL’s network of distribution of victuals and the closely related to it problem of butter “acquisition”. The fourth part deals with the most important problem for consumers, that is with butter’s high price, while the last one presents an image of the authorities of the analysed period emerging from the complaints sent after successive price rises – the image drawn in dark colours.
