Polska 1944/45-1989 : studia i materiały 10 (2011)

The article is devoted to the attitude of the National Party’s (Polish: Stronnictwo Narodowe) leadership in exile towards the Committee for Legalisation of the SN, established in Poland by a part of Party’s members in the summer of 1945. The initiative had a purpose to create another, in addition to the Polish People’s Party (Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe), group of the open anticommunist opposition. From the very beginning, the émigré leadership of the SN was aware of the risks of official activities in the public sphere, dominated by the communists and their apparatus of terror. Thus, the activity of the SN Committee for Legalisation did not meet with the support of the Party’s leader in London Tadeusz Bielecki. He was afraid that any attempt by the national activists to enter political activity would be construed as their approval of the Yalta dictate imposed on Poland. Bielecki was also against the SN activists joining the structures established by other political movements. This stance of his was the result of his belief that there would be war between the Anglo-Saxons and the Soviet Union and the conflict would lead to the independence of Poland and the restoration of the pre-war borders.
