The article is an analysis based on ethnographical research of two types of Islam practised by Bulgarian-speaking Muslims (Pomaks) living in the Western Rhodopes — 'adat' and 'pure' Islam. Comparing those two types of Islam allows to grasp changes in religious life of Pomaks, leaving local tradition for models of religiosity imported from e.g. Saudi Arabia. Simultaneously it shows that those changes are a multidimensional process, difficult for univocal interpretation
