Electron microscopy analysis of the heart biopsy
Dilated cardiomyopathy. Ultrastructural analysis revealed a number of abnormalities in the cardiomyocytes structure.Changed sarcomere pattern, disorganization of myofibrils and in many areas their complete atrophy were observed. Mitochondria partially devoid of mitochondrial cristae were seen in the sarcoplasm and connective tissue was abundant in the extracellular space. Cardiomyocyte nuclei were abnormally shaped, nuclear envelope was corrugated ,with numerous indentations, and in some nucler broken.Mitochondria were characterized by bright matrix and partial loss of cristae . Mitochondria with a dark mitochondrial matrix, containing characteristic inclusions or glycogen in their interior, as well as giant mitochondria, many times larger than normal, were also observed .
