The structure of p53 tumour suppressor gene and molecular mechanisms of p53 functionare characterized. The effects of the p53 protein on gene transcription, control of the cell cycle,DNA repair and synthesis, cell differentiation, and programmed cell death are discussed. Besidesclinical implications of inactivation of the p53 gene in the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapyof human cancer are mentioned.
