Inwentaryzacja populacji kopytnych - pędzenia ; Inventory of hoofed populations driven through entire forest complexes
Polska Akademia Nauk. Komitet Ekologii
Pages 403-413 ; 24 cm ; Bibliographical references (page 412) ; Abstract in English
Errors in the currently used methods of making inventories of large mammals in forest complexes have made it necessary to elaborate a method providing real numbers. This method is based on successive drivings in consecutive parts of the forest at a simultaneous observation of animal movements between the area controlled and not controlled yet. The animals are driven through whole division belts with observers on three sides of the belt (Fig. 1). Observers control the borders between the consecutive driving belts. The data presented by observers include the numer of animals and the direction of their moyements. Different algebraic marks indicate the type of these moyements (Fig. 4). For each driying belt an animal balance is made (Fig.5). Total data from all belts inform about the abundance of game in the whole forest. The significance of this method lies in the fact that in the forest examined all indiyiduals are counted, furthermore a comparison of thus obtained results with those obtained by means of simpler methods allows to test the latter and thus allows to estimate the error of simpler methods used.
