Abstract:

The paper is a literature review on methods of assessing reproduction, regularities and ecological mechanisms connected with attaining sexual maturity, the oestrus cycle, duration of pregnancy, litter size, participation of females in the reproduction, duration of breeding season, population recruitment. Attention has been paid to processes stabilizing the reproduciion (figs. 1, 2, 3), and variability ranges for pregnancy duration (Table I) and litter size (Tables II, III) are given. Means of stabilizing reproduction (Fig. 4) are discussed as well as participation of reproduction in changes of population numbers (Fig. 5).
