Muscle segment examination in light & electron microscopy

Abstract:

Diagnosis: Suspected late glycogen II. In the collected specimen, muscle fibers of different diameters mixed irregularly between them are separated by connective tissue within peri and endomysium. The division of fibers into metabolic types retained type 1 fibers clearly smaller. Individual fibers show signs of necrosis with phagocytosis, perivascular single clusters of lymphoid cells are also visible. Morphological image of the slice requires further ultrastructural assessment. In the ultrastructural analysis, the abnormal mitochondrial structure was visualized within type 1 fibers, characterized by swelling, crest loss with complete emptying of the mitochondrial interior. Conclusions: the observed changes may suggest a defect of mitochondrial enzymes.
