Abstract:

Changes of the mobility of individuals within the area of the ecological population were investigated. The investigations concerned two predatory species of the genus Carabus L. In the optimum sites with relatively high population density, where the probability of attack is small, hungry individuals are characterised by a considerable mobility which causes their emigration to the peripheries of the area. On the peripheries of the area, where the population density is low and where is a great probability of attack, the mobility of individuals does not decrease after feeding. In effect the satiated individuals reemigrate to optimum sites, where thev show small mobility. The emigration of hungry individuals and the reemigration of satiated individuals seems to be a way of regulating the energv balance of the Carabus population in opitmum sites with high population density.
