After the death of Augustus II, Russiaʼs supporters mostly backed the French candidate for the throne, Stanisław Leszczyński. Russia actively tried to organise a new pro-Russian party. This article examines Russiaʼs policy after establishing a pro-Russian party in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1734-1735. Petersburg regarded the Potocki party as Russiaʼs main enemies in the Commonwealth. After the surrender of Gdańsk, Russia proceeded to build a pro-Russian party from Leszczyńskiʼs former supporters and the Potocki opponents – the Czartoryski party. The policy of St Petersburg was to be implemented by the Russian envoy to Warsaw, Herman Keyserling. “Familia” (the Czartoryski party) was seen as a popular party, highly influential in the Commonwealth, sympathetic to St Petersburg, which would secure Russiaʼs interests for many years. However, it failed to win support for the Czartoryskis from the royal court, which feared the domination of Russian partisans in the Commonwealth.
