W dawniejszych czasach bobry zasiedlały na obecnym terenie ZSRR prawie całą strefę lasów wchodząc wzdłuż rzek w strefę lasostepów i stepów. Obecnie zachowały się tylko w nielicznych, odległych od siebie miejscach. Ochrona i reaklimatyzacja bobrów doprowadziły do wzrostu liczebności do 40 000 sztuk (1964 rok), w porównaniu z 900 osobnikami jakie notowano w latach dwudziestych bieżącego stulecia.
