In recent years the progress in new techniques raises expectations of animal breeders for rapid improvement of farm animals. Biotechnology opened the way for a relatively cheap production of recombined growth hormones in bacteria. These hormones have been successfully applied to improve lactation in dairy cows as well as to stimulate growth of pigs, calves and lambs. Moreover, DNA recombination and gene transfer offer a powerful new tool in animal research and technology. Transfer of fusin genes has already been accomplished into bovine, ovine and porcine genomes. This may be an effective way of producing transgenic domestic animals which show controlled expression of desired genes. Some of the potential applications of the transgenic technology are: improvement of the animal growth and milk yield, production of human proteins of therapeutic value in the milk of transgenic dairy animals, improvement of milk quality both for nutrition and for industrial purposes.
