Abstract:

The role of microorganisms in manganese oxidation and reduction processes taking part inground water environment is presented. Manganese oxidation catalysed by bacteria takes placein presence of dissolved oxygen, at relatively high Eh conditions about 600 mV and pH 6,5-7and this process proceeds more rapidly than any non-biological reaction. Chemical oxidation ofmanganese could be achieved only by raising the pH to 8,5 or over. Manganese(rV) is reducedalready at the Eh value -i-300 mV and pH values between 6 and 7. The reduction process canbe catalysed by bacterial enzymatic systems and coupled with oxidation of organic matter orindirectly by bacterial metabolites
