Abstract:

In 1958 de Gaulle was facing serious international challenges. And, although he was not a supporter of the common market, he decided that France would enter its realization. His main European partner became Chancellor Adenauer. Disappointed by the American re¬fusal to strengthen the role of France within the NATO, de Gaulle decided to withdraw France from the military structures of the organisation. In relations between the East and West, he wanted to depart from the policy of blocks in the favour of understanding with the USSR.
