Abstract:

This article is an attempt at recreating the image of the Columbian Exposition – one of the greatest world fairs in the 19th century – presented in the Polish diaspora press issuing in the United States of America. Particularly large part was dedicated to the Polish accents during the event. The Polish-language periodicals eagerly recounted the matters of organization of a distinct Polish art section, the performances of Ignacy Jan Paderewski, the lecture delivered by Helena Modrzejewska, the reaction of the audience to the Polish art exhibition, and finally, the success which the organization of the Polish Day turned out to be during the exposition in Chicago. The author draws attention to the universal topics, which showed up in the Polish magazines, such as fascination for the development of civilization and technical innovations on the one hand, and the exoticism and downright tawdry entertainment on the other hand. The former was embodied by the White City built particularly to the needs of the exhibition by the lake Michigan, the latter by the neighbouring entertainment district, Midway Plaisance.
