Object description:

Photo (scan from slide). Kumbh mela views. The picture shows ascetics and pilgrims sitting on the ground in several rows. There are men and women among them. In front of each of them there is a plate braided of leaves. They are waiting for a meal distributed daily to members of monasteries (akhara) and pilgrims. These events take place during the kumbh mela festival in Allahabad, they are celebrated every 12 years (after 6 years, the so-called half-mela is held). It is the most numerous festival in Northern India, and the uniqueness of Allahabad is that it lies where the Jamuna flows into the Ganges. The place where the waters merge, and this place is precisely visible in the different colors of the two waters - is considered to be particularly suitable for a bath during kumbh mela.
