W okolicach Kijowa odłowiono w okresie od grudnia 1963 do marca 1965 r. 391 osobników Sorex araneus Linnaeus, 1758 i 80 osobników Sorex minutus Linnaeus, 1766. Zwierzęta ważono, mierzono ich długość ciała, określano wiek i płeć, a także ważono narządy wewnętrzne: wątrobę, serce, nerki i jądra. Ponadto, dla scharakteryzowania sezonowych zmian poziomu utuczenia ryjówki aksamitnej ważono główne złoża tłuszczu w jamie ciała. Określano też zawartość lipidów i wody w mózgu. Wykonano również badania nad zapotrzebowaniem pokarmowym ryjówek w zależności od obecności domku z gniazdem w klatce i braku miejsc schronienia oraz w zależności od wykonywanej pracy zwiazanej z poszukiwaniem pokarmu.
