Abstract:

Several cell lines producing high of iridoids were isolated from Penstemon serrulatus cell suspensioncultures using a small aggregate cloning technique. Three lines (AS-82; AS-210-20 and AS-210-49) maintairied high production of penstemide, 3,7-4,2% on a dry weight basis (529-596 mg/1 of culture) and serrulatoldside, 2.0-2,8% of dry weight (274-398 mg/I of culture) even after 42 non-selected subcultures (almost 2 years). "The iridoid production was considerably higher than that of the original strain and wascompared with iridoids levels found in the leaves of P. serrulatus.
