The authors present the case of a 49-year-old male in whom typical syringomyelia and syringobulbia was diagnosed, running a chronic course during 17 years. Anato- mopathologically an intraspinal tumor was found with poorly differentiated cellular elements, extending through the entire length of the spinal cord and lower part of the medulla oblongata. In its lower part the tumor contained a cavity through its entire length, showing character indicating its dysmyeloplastic origin, rather than necrotic one. In the authors opinion this case was one of primary developmental anomalyty of the spinal cord, on the basis of which a benign tumor was formed. It is possible that the neoplastic process arose as the result of blastomatic transformation of the same cellular residues from which in typical cases of syringomyelia a non-neoplastic glial wall is formed.
