The role of ants in meadow habitats is analysed with reference to their contribution to the trophic structure, amount of organic matter used, and changes in soil processes. The role of ants is determined by their social organization and associated high metabolic costs, as well as by their population dynamics, which is mainly controlled by intrapopulation factors. A hypothesis on the mechanisms of number regulation in ant populations is presented. The effect of ant colonies and environmental factors on soil processes in ant nests is analysed.
