Celem artykułu jest pokazanie stosunku Amerykanów do I wojny światowej i rytuałów oraz sposobów upamiętniania poległych żołnierzy. Dużą rolę w kreowaniu pamięci zbiorowej o Great War odegrali wojskowi i weterani, m.in. poprzez utrwalenie żołnierskiej narracji o wojnie (soldier’s story), rytuały podczas dorocznych uroczystości (Memorial Day i Veterans Day), jak również ceremonie w trakcie ponownych pochówków sprowadzanych z Europy tysięcy towarzyszy broni.
