Abstract:

The article describes events in Central Asia in the years 1839-1842, when Russian penetration of the region resulted in serious British intervention into the domestic situation in Afghanistan. At the beginning of 1839 British-Indian armies entered this country, overthrowing Emir Dost Mohammad, suspected of favouring the Russians. The discussed book by William Dalrymple deals with the resultant Anglo-Afghan war.
