Polska 1944/45-1989 : studia i materiały 13 (2015)

The article presents the activities of voivodeship custodies of the public security agencies in the first decade of the communist regime in Poland (1945–1956) on the example of the Custody of the Voivode Office of Public Security (WUBP/WUdsBP) in Szczecin. The author tried to look at the problem from the organizational perspective. She attempted to reconstruct their place in the structures of the voivodeship offices, show the competence division among the officers employed there and characterize the cadre of the arrest in Szczecin. Next, the author described the building itself, including its condition and facilities in cells, concentrating on “everyday life” in custody during the analyzed time. In many respects the conditions presented in the article were worse than those in prisons or in some work camps. Custody prisoners had no right to contact their families or their lawyers, they did not receive any food parcels, newspapers or books. In crowded cells they were waiting for interrogations, which were the most violent at that time. The methods of interrogations together with conditions affronting human dignity were supposed to break down prisoners and accelerate the completion of the investigation. Yet, many prisoners resided the persecutions for years. The article is based on source materials collected in the archives of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), on various documents from questioned victims gathered by the Regional Commission for the Investigation of Crimes against the Polish Nation (OKŚZpNP) in Szczecin and on a few memoirs of the victims.
