Abstract:

In 1920–1921, representatives of Soviet Russia signed peace treaties with five bordering states created on the ruins of the Romanov Empire: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, and Poland. The first was the peace made with Estonia, which wanted to formally end hostilities on its territory and stabilise its newly gained independence. On the other hand, the last one in 1920 was the Finnish-Soviet treaty signed, as was the peace with Esto-nia in Tartu. It was an attempt to normalise relations between Finland and Bolshevik-ruled Russia. What the Riga Treaty of 1921 was for Poland, for the countries on both sides of the Gulf of Finland, were the treaties signed a little earlier in Tartu. For this reason alone, it is worth recalling the circumstances under which they were concluded and their signifi cance for Estonia, Finland, Soviet Russia, and the eastern part of the Baltic Sea region.
